| October 11, 2022 -- Harmony Grange held its annual Agricultural Fair on Saturday, Aug. 27. Fairgoers were treated to demonstrations form the Masuk Robotics Club, the Monroe Historical Society and Jim Ritter’s Backyard Solar Energy Demonstration, as well as antique cars and tractors. Maddie Ritter won first prize for her sunflower. Guardians Farm and Red Barn Crafts brought their wares, Dirt Road Dairy Farmers, a 4H Club displayed goats and a beautiful jersey calf and there were numerous examples of chickens from Silkies to Heritage breeds.
Highlights of the day, besides the fabulous food, like the delicious corn donated by Mason’s Farm was the agricultural judging and an amateur photo contest.
The agricultural competition was fierce. Judge Cynthia Giancaspro, a professional horticulturalist and owner of Garden-Pro, an agricultural consulting firm, said she had a tough time picking winners from all of the incredible entries.
There were many first prize winners, but ultimately it was James Rowe’s duck eggs that stole the show. Rowe, a Trumbull resident and student at Platt Technical High School, won first prize for his duck eggs, which then went on to win Best of Show.
George Ward, 96 years old, Past Master of Harmony, exhibited the dairy equipment his family used in the late 30s and 40s in Maine when the farm had four milking cows. He milked two cows mornings and evenings and his father milked the other two. The equipment consisted of a milk/cream separator, a cream to butter churn, a cream earthen crock and a butter form box.
Many hours of planning and preparation by Grange members made the event possible.
