From The Chaplain's Desk

  JULY 5, 2014 --

(Taken from Guideposts)

When my brother-in law was a child, he always knew he was special. Every year on his birthday~ the one he shared with the USA~ the skies over the lake in the family’s backyard would light up with explosions of fireworks, and the town would decorate itself and hold a parade. His older brothers would play along as Justin eagerly anticipated “his” special celebration.

As Justin grew older, he realized that those fireworks weren’t just for him. He could have let his newfound knowledge cloud his childhood memories, but instead he celebrated the optimism of his youth.

Justin’s childlike outlook reminds me of the wonders God puts in the world. There are the rose bushes in my backyard that greet me at breakfast, the birds singing my way into work, and the amazing watermelon. True, God put those wonders on earth for everyone, but I believe He also thought specifically about me when He allowed the redbird to nest in the tree beside my kitchen window.

Just as aspects of faith can be circular and mind~boggling, I believe they can also be crystal~clear. Of course those fireworks celebrated our country, but they also celebrated Justin’s existence. Take a minute today to look at the wonders and blessings that God has put in your path. It’s okay to feel spoiled in God’s great love!

Lord, thank You for putting tiny pleasures like fireworks and fireflies as reminders of Your presence in our daily lives.

Have a great summer.
