Grangers remember 75-yr. Member Barbara Morrissette

By Wallingford Funeral Home (10/28/12)

  OCTOBER 28, 2012 --

Barbara Pogmore Thorpe Morrissette of Wallingford, died peacefully on October 26, 2012, at her home after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

A seventy-five year member of the Wallingford Grange 33, Mrs. Morrissette was well-known for her participation in State Grange events, the State Grange Agricultural Fair, local Grange Chicken Barbecue's and programs, working at town voting polls, the Holiday For Giving, organization of annual Family Reunions, the re-dedication of Marcus Cooke Park, joyous musical presentations at local nursing homes and at the Grange, her famous strawberry jelly, homemade pickles, New England baked beans and award-winning apple pies. Creating huge gardens of zinnias, cosmos, coxcomb, dahlias and roses and pumpkins that were among the largest in the state filled her retirement years with pleasure. In the winter Barbara would create crewel pictures and knitted projects while enjoying UCONN basketball games.

Her many survivors include her daughter Virginia and son-in-law Marc Stewart of Wallingford and her son Trevor and his wife Carol Thorpe of Meriden, step-children Nicole and Ken Smith, Guilford and Lesley Morrissette of Branford, grand-children Brett N. Stewart, Trevor (Nancy) Thorpe, Matthew (Suzanne) Thorpe, Jim Brown, and granddaughter Shelley Barbara Stewart. Sisters and brothers include Jane Maxwell, Edith Nagy, Fran Myers, Frederick and Barbara Pogmore, Richard and Jeannie Pogmore and George and Dorothy Pogmore. Barbara leaves twelve god-children, twenty-nine nieces and nephews and their spouses and children, and great-grandchildren Matthew, Alyssa, Trevor, Kayleigh Ann, and Caterina. Special appreciation is given to Agata Truskinski of Euro-American Homecare who provided gracious and loving care.

During her lifetime, Barbara was happily married to two WWII Navy veterans. She married R. Trevor Thorpe at the close WWII, and had many wonderful years raising their children together until his death in 1972. Later in life she married Royal Morrissette, with whom she shared the love of gardening and Grange, until his death. Both husbands, her parents and an uncle were lovingly cared for during their end of life by Barbara. She retired from Meriden-Wallingford Hospital and had also been employed at the Choate School and Cooke's Equipment.
