Enfield Grange mourns passing of 87-year member Joe Smith

Joseph P. Smith Sr., 102, a resident of Enfield for most of his life and formerly of Suffield, died late Sunday evening, Aug. 19, 2012, at St. Francis Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Suffield, a son of the late John and Catherine (Zima) Smith. Joe was employed for over 23 years as a machinist at Hamilton-Standard, where he was a member and past officer of the Pratt & Whitney and Hamilton-Standard Retiree's Club and was a member of the IAM Local 1746 of East Hartford. He was previously employed for many years at the woolen mills located in Broad Brook. Joe was a member for over 87 years of the Enfield Grange 151, where he served as a seventh-degree member and past master for 49 years. He also served as the past president and director of the Four Town Fair, in which he held a membership for 85 years. Joe was a longtime communicant of St. Bernard Church of Enfield. He also was an avid gardener and farmer who sold his produce to the local markets. Joe was married on Nov. 30, 1939, to his beloved wife and best friend of 67 years, Margaret (Rochette) Smith, who died on Dec. 21, 2006.

He leaves two loving children, Joseph P. "Buddy" Smith Jr. and his wife, Toni, of Enfield and Judith Elliott and her husband, Joseph, of East Windsor, with whom he made his home; his sister, Louise Kamay of Suffield; five grandchildren, Robert, Debra, Kevin, Scott, and Joseph III; 13 great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Joe was predeceased by his son, Thomas J. Smith, who died in 1998; his brothers, Peter, William, Andrew, and Stephen Smith; and his sisters, Cora Legienza, Mary Tobey, Josephine Clark, and Julia Francimore.

His funeral was held on Thursday, Aug. 23, at 9 a.m. from the Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapel, 61 South Road, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Bernard Church, 426 Hazard Ave., both in Enfield. Rites of committal concluded at St. Catherine Cemetery, Broad Brook.
