James S. McGowan, 86, of Boombridge Road, North Stonington, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on March 2, 2011. He was beloved husband of Patricia (Perry) McGowan. Sadly, she predeceased him on May 17, 2010.

Born in New London on June 12, 1924, he was the son of the late Thomas and Bessie (Babcock) McGowan.

James served his country proudly in the United States Army during World War II.

James was a member of the North Stonington Volunteer Fire Department, Odd Fellows in Niantic, Conn., and the North Stonington Grange.

He also enjoyed NASCAR racing, watching the birds at his home in North Stonington and spending time with his sons and grandsons.

He will be sadly missed by his two sons, David J. McGowan and his fiancée, Nellie, and Charles P. McGowan and his wife, Debra, all of North Stonington. He was the loving grandfather of Ryan J. McGowan and Matthew D. McGowan of North Stonington. He also leaves his sister Mary Gavitt and her husband, Charles, and his brother, Edmond McGowan and his wife, Rose, all of North Stonington; his sister-in-law Shirley Perry of Ashaway; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife of almost 60 years, he was predeceased by his brothers, Thomas E. McGowan Jr., Robert McGowan, William McGowan, Ellis McGowan, and George McGowan; and his sisters, Betty Campo, Agnes Thompson and Alma Romagna.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly. Funeral service and burial in Union Cemetery will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Home and Hospice Care of Southeastern CT, 179 Gallivan Lane, Uncasville, CT 06382 or North Stonington Little League, P.O. Box 419, North Stonington, CT 06359.
