JANUARY 24, 2011 -- Willard Frederick Vaill Jr., 87, passed away on Jan. 21, 2011. He was the husband 65 years to Josephine (Wheeler) Vaill.
Born in Gill, Mass., on Oct. 2, 1923, he was the son of the late Willard Frederick Sr. and Lucy (Tanner) Vaill. He moved to Connecticut when he was young, and attended schools in New Britain, Warren, Milton and Litchfield. He worked for a short time at Stanley Tools in New Britain and for Avalon Orchards in Bantam for quite a few years before they went out of business. Mr. Vaill had also worked on several poultry and dairy farms including the Tanner Farm on Rabbit Hill Road. He most recently worked at the Washington Supply Co. where he retired in 1992 after 22 years.
Mr. Vaill was a member of the Warren Congregational Church, 6th degree member of the Grange and had his Gold Star. He held offices in Witchita Subordinate Grange No. 132, Housatonic Valley Pamona No. 10, and Taghhannuck Grange No. 100. He was also a member of the Warren Prime Timers Senior Group, a 4-H leader for several years and was active in 4-H service clubs and 4-H fairs.
In addition to his wife, Josephine, he is survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins, great nieces, great nephews, a great-great nephew and a great-great niece. He was predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Screen of Plainville.
A funeral service will be held 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at Rowe Funeral Home, 283 Torrington Road, Litchfield. Burial will be private. Friends and family may call from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday prior to the service at the funeral home.
