DECEMBER 4, 2010 -- Thoughts on the Fifth Degree taken from Rev. Aaron Grosh’s article written in 1876.
FIFTH DEGREE: “The Emblem of this degree is the full, outpouring Cornucopia of her choicest productions. As a jewel, it will be best to have crossed Cornucopias. The usual meaning in this emblem is well known to be Plenty, to which we add Faith in the Great Provider and in this degree an additional signification is given to it by those who have passed through the trial and been approved.
“This emblem is to remind us that we are not to accumulate merely to retain, but also to dispense- not gather merely that self may possess, but that others may also enjoy- and that thus we may enjoy in their enjoyments, and increase by giving. It also reminds us of the stores thus laid up for us against a day of possible want; when what we have thus dispensed may be imported to us again- perhaps through others who were indirectly aided- and when the Horn of Plenty of our Order, filled by the outpourings of many brethren and sisters, will be ready with its overflowings of knowledge, wisdom, goodness, and plenty to supply our wants of whatsoever nature or kind.” |
