NOVEMBER 1, 2010 -- Sigmund J. Evankow, 82, of Lyme, passed away peacefully at his son Steven's home in Lyme on Oct. 22, 2010, from complications due to Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases.
He was born in New York City on Oct. 31, 1927, the son of the late Emil and Helen Ewankow. He attended PS 153 and George Washington High School in New York City. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1952, with a bronze star. He was a charter and life member of the VFW Post 1467, Old Lyme and a member of the Lyme Grange.
He married the former Lois Hansen on Feb. 6, 1954, at the Memorial Baptist Church in Hartford; she survives.
Together they raised their six children, Marc and his wife, Linda, Steven, Peter, and Paul, all of Lyme, David of Gorham, N.H., and Lynn Freudenthal-Evankow of Old Lyme. He is also survived by his sister, Gloria Maddocks; his brother, Emil; his grandchildren, Cindy, Tommy, and Heidi Freudenthal, Ann, Ethan, Nicholas, Marc Jr., and Chelsea Evankow; two step grandchildren, Jenny Edmonds and Emma Rose Page; a great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his twin brother, Henry; his sister, Lucy; and his grandson, Jacob Freudenthal.
With his partner, Gerard Morin, Sigmund owned Shoreline Builders and did a tremendous amount of work at the Submarine Base, the Coast Guard, and at area homes.
