Around The Grange
May 2023 Musings from Winchester Grange

By Todd Gelineau

  MAY 6, 2023 --

May 9: Mother, Potluck at 6 P.M.

May 23: Memorial Day Program by Chaplain, Ref. by Earl & Sandy Phillips.

June 13: Dad, Ref. Betty & Bill Ahrens

June 27: Election of Officers with Country Store. Ref. Rae Fassio & Sue Kline

At our second April meeting, we learned the State Grange Foundation had approved our Grange Improvement Grant request of $1,000 to go towards needed improvements to the lighting in the Post Office and out in the parking lot.

There had been speculation in the community about the future of the Winchester Center Post Office as the Winsted Post Office has been slow in replacing the outgoing mailbox damaged by vandals. Winchester Grange received notice from the Post Office of their decision to renew their lease for the next five years.

Having a Post Office in Winchester Center is not only about convenience, it is also about identity. Had the Rural Delivery Unit (as it is officially known) closed, the zip code 06094 would have gone away and all Winchester/Winsted residents would reside within the 06098 zip code. That would have been a tough pill to swallow as Winsted is really a city within the Town of Winchester.

Until next time, enjoy your spring.
