AUGUST 22, 2016 -- One of the highlights of summer is celebrating Wilton’s rural roots with the annual Cannon Grange Agricultural Fair. This year is the 84th year Wilton will mark the event, which is set for this Sunday, Aug. 28.
The annual event is an authentic agricultural fair with juried exhibits inside the historic Grange Hall of home-baked goods, sewing and needlework, hand crafts, home-grown vegetables, fruit and flowers. Also located inside the Hall will be exhibits of eggs (from a variety of birds), photography, and a decorated Lamb Sign. All the rules, regulations and descriptions of categories to enter are contained in the Fair Book, a bright, wintergreen color booklet available from area merchants, and at Wilton Town Hall and Wilton Library, as well as on the Cannon Grange website.
There is an abundance of contests for children, youth and adults to enter with prize ribbons to win. Each year a new category is added to the list of contests, and for 2016 the new category for children is “3-D Printing.” Contestants are asked to prepare something seen on a farm. The new category for adults is “Coloring,” with a template drawing to be found online at the Grange’s website as well. The fair committee members are Wilton residents Michele Clark and Don Offinger, and Ridgefield residents Bil Mikulewicz and Doug Shepherd, and they promise a fun-filled day for all who attend the fair.
Organizers have scheduled live musical entertainment throughout the day, plus there will be games for kids, and great shopping with selected concessionaires and vendors for teens and adults. The day will end with the annual watermelon-eating contest and auction of baked goods, vegetables and flowers from the exhibits.
The Cannon Grange Agricultural Fair is a fun family event which takes place at the Grange Hall and grounds located at 25 Cannon Rd.. Parking is available at the Cannondale Railroad Station with a reminder to all to use the crosswalk in front of the Grange Hall. Admission is $2 per person, or $1 with a canned good donation for the Wilton Food Pantry.
