September News from North Stonington Community Grange

By Nancy Weissmuller

  SEPTEMBER 2016 --

Sept. 9: Installation of Officers

Sept. 23: “Birds of a Feather Flock Together”

The program at our one meeting in July was presented by the WAC. We learned some handy food facts, took a test on food myths and learned about some old-time remedies we were glad had passed into oblivion. Jason Miner have an interesting presentation about our first Grange fairs, starting in 1910. According to George Stone’s Cracker Barrel Chronicles the middle day of our 1913 Fair had a crowd of 6,000. This year’s North Stonington Agricultural Fair had a considerably larger crowd, of course, but we are glad our Fair tradition continues after all these years.

At our September 23 meeting we will welcome Genevieve Nuttall from Osprey Nation. She will present a program on osprey tracking. Not so many years ago we were afraid we would lose our osprey population due to overuse of pesticides; but now, thankfully, we are seeing them everywhere. This should be a very interesting program and we hope to see a good crowd there. And if these “scattered showers” will just scatter themselves over this way a little more often next time we’ll tell you all about awesome August.
