Norfield Grange News for February 2015

By Ruth L. Hickcox

  FEBRUARY 5, 2015 --

We honored Assistant Steward Steve Porter with a surprise party in December, serving chili and cake and potluck items… his first surprise party ever!  After Christmas our Flora and high school senior Anna Kimberly launched the work on her Girl Scout project with volunteer help from Grange members, classmates and friends, to put in 47+ hours of labor towards building a Butterfly Garden and sanctuary at the Katharine Ordway Preserve near the Grange Hall.  The group spent over 27 hours clearing the parking lot of brush, downed trees, etc. and enjoyed pizza snacks and drinks around the bonfires as they attended the burning brush and wood.  This will allow the Preserve Steward and Norfield Grange member Mark Mainieri to mow the area to keep it free for visitors’ use.  The next day a second group of volunteers came out and put in 20+ more hours to move brush, cut down dead trees, and repair stone walls.  The cleared field will then be transformed into a butterfly garden and sanctuary for endangered monarch butterflies and honey bees – our food pollinators!
