| JANUARY 4, 2015 -- Our Christmas Boutique was held December 6 at the Grange Hall. This was one of four events held in Monroe on this date in the general vicinity so we had traffic by the hall from the other events. The Catholic Church up the street had a Christmas event, the Boy Scouts sold wreaths at two locations, and the Monroe Historical Society had their event. Many hours were spent in securing and tagging items for the silent auction, in setting up Christmas articles on tables for the attic sale, getting the hall ready for the event, baking for the bake table, and securing and cooking food for the lunches. More time was spent during the day to tend to the needs of the people attending. Many thanks are owed to the members and others for making the event successful.
For our November meeting, we had as our guest speaker, Guy Beadsley, who is a registered organic farmer from Shelton and he spoke on “Organic Gardening”. He participates in the Farmers Market each summer in Shelton. His discussion covered such items as the chemicals used in organic fertilizers and how each effects the plants, soil testing, plants resistant to blight, and the type of fertilizer to use and how it should be used for various plants to be grown in the garden. Organic fertilizer is available from a company in Monroe and is sold by the pound.
Harmony Grange will have special meetings to cover to important areas, membership and our 125th anniversary. We will have a membership to campaign to get new members from Monroe and surrounding towns to keep Harmony Grange active in the community as an agricultural society. There is active farming in Monroe and in surrounding towns of Shelton and Trumbull. The next area will be our 125th anniversary which we rescheduled to the Spring of 2015.
Our 70+ year member, Gertrude Wilson, continues to improve at Lord Chamberlain Rehabilitation Center. On Thanksgiving Day, a cousin of Gertrude and her sister, Ruth, drove Ruth to the Center and the sisters had Thanksgiving dinner together in the dining room. A very enjoyable time as both were in wheelchairs.
