Harmony Grange July News Update

By George Ward

  JULY 5, 2014 --

The Round-a-Bout at the intersection of Routes 110 & 111 in Monroe will have a big effect on Harmony Grange. The most important fact is that direct entrance to Route 110 from Herd Avenue and direct entrance from Route 110 to Herd Avenue will not be possible. Harmony Grange’s parking lot is off Herd Avenue. The Grange Hall will be reached by entering Moose Hill Road from Route 110 to Ruth Street to Herd Avenue. From Route 111, Jeannette Street to Herd Avenue will be the route.

In a meeting, held on June 4th, 2014, the State Engineer presented a new design and the cul-de-sac will be moved from near the front entrance of the hall to near the rear of the hall where Herd Avenue will end.The part of Herd Avenue, adjacent to our parking lot, will be available to Harmony Grange for parking. We will have ample time to discuss the changes as the design of the project will take up to two years before actual construction will start.

Our May Tag Sale was a success. Attendance during the day was good and many items were purchased. A big thank-you to The Grange members who helped out before and during the event.

Harmony Grange’s annual Agriculture Fair will be held August 23, 2014 at the Grange hall. We will have several special meetings to make arrangements and preparations. We intend to invite a group or several groups from the Agricultural School to participate in our Fair this year. There is a video on Dairy Farming in Connecticut I believe is available, and if attainable and with the with the proper equipment, we will  show it in the building during the Fair.

The next big event after the Fair will be our 125th anniversary. This will be an open meeting and will be held on a Sunday in either September or October. We intend to have some information on farming and the historian from the town of Monroe as our guest speaker. There will be entertainment and refreshments. The Grange and farming have been very important to the people of Monroe.

July 11: Picnic at 6:30, Regular meeting at 7:30
