Cannon Grange celebrates its roots at annual fair

By Christina Hennessy, CT Post (8/14/13)

  AUGUST 14, 2013 --

Do you bake a mean batch of cookies? Are you a whiz at flower arrangement? Do you have a gem of a summer squash growing in your garden?

Talented cooks, artists, gardeners, sewers and others will be gathering Sunday, Aug. 18, in Wilton to see just who is the best during the 81st annual Cannon Grange Agricultural Fair and Exposition.

Volunteer organizer Don Offinger said every year is a surprise as to what comes in and he expects submissions to trickle in right up to early Sunday morning.

The fair is a way to stay connected to the agricultural roots of the organization's beginnings, yet serve its present function as more of a social organization for families, said Offinger, who grew up in Wilton and now lives in Norwalk.

"The (fair) engenders lots of interest in the community," Offinger said.

In addition to the many displays in the hall, there are games and face-painting for children, concessionaires and musical entertainment.

The band Great Blue will perform. The quartet has been growing its fan base and getting ready for life on the road after they all graduate from college next year.

"We've been playing as many shows as possible in the area," said Peter Anspach, a guitarist and vocalist for the band.

He, along with fellow 2011 Wilton High School graduates bassist and singer Seth Zucker, drummer and vocalist Nick Hanna and keyboardist Kevin Houska, have been honing their sound, shifting gears from a largely instrumental sound to one that features plenty of voices and harmonies.

Offinger added that the Cannon Grange also has long been involved in initiatives that promote a healthier community, whether it is supporting local agriculture, providing a place for the community to meet or helping young people to develop their talents. He said the grange has recently joined forces with similar institutions across the state in an effort to find solutions to childhood and adult obesity.

Cannon Grange, 25 Cannon Road, Wilton. Sunday, Aug. 18, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., rain or shine. Free. 203-762-1900, www.cannongrange.org.
