Cannon Grange August News Update

By Don Offinger

  AUGUST 1, 2013 --

Many good things happening at our Cannon Grange Hall.  We’ve had a run of party rentals that help with our finances, a kindly church group that has been using our Hall as a worship and spiritual center for their small congregation, our new AED is in place in the Hall, and the cross walk is painted across Cannon Road in front of our Hall with the neon green signs identifying the pedestrian zone.   Our cross walk application took a while to be approved by the local Police Commission, and then the lines painted.  We consider this to be one of our finest Community Service & Safety projects; as it benefits anyone wishing to cross the road in front of our Hall from the Railroad station and the village stores.

Our recent election of officers will have Doug Shepherd serving as our President for the ensuing Grange year.

Two of our members are moving to new locations:  Betty Johnson is moving to the Wilton Commons for seniors, and Peggy Garrity is moving to a senior environment in Newtown so that she will be closer to her adult children in Danbury and Bethel.  We wish both ladies happiness in their new homes.

Our annual agricultural fair is set for Sunday, August 18th from 10 AM - 4 PM.  We hope to see many Grange friends this year.

Chase Hollingsworth, son of BillieSue and Dale Hollingsworth, was recently given a sportsman award by the Pomfret School, his prep school, for excellence in the play and sport of Golf.  Chase has been for many years one of our best workers at our annual agricultural fair:  no task too hard, and no request turned down for this person of action.  Chase, we’re very proud of you and your accomplishment.

We’re very happy to note that two of our members were recently elected as officers of Fairfield Co. Pomona Grange:  John Kriz as the new Gatekeeper and Don Offinger as a member of the Executive Committee.  John is well known for his work with the Connecticut Farmland Trust as a board member.

Our summer meeting schedule is posted.  Visiting Patrons are always welcome -- won’t you join us?
