JULY 10, 2013 -- People and pets are welcome at the Wolcott Grange’s Party Animal Picnic Saturday, July 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. The Grange Hall is located at 313 Bound Line Road.
It’s a free picnic and open house, and dogs are welcome, according to Master of Grange 173 Joe Ouimet.
“We take donations, but people are under no obligation. We’re looking for people to come down and see what the Grange is about. We service the Wolcott and Bristol area, a good chunk of our core officers are from Bristol,” he said.
The Grange will present its Distinguished Citizen Award, which goes to a non-Grange member — Cassandra Mastrianni of Wolcott.
The Granger of the Year Award will go to Alyscia Talbot of Bristol, who is chairperson of the Junior Grange, which is just starting up.
Talbot and Mastrianni are both Connecticut scholarship pageant titleholders who will be performing their talents at the picnic, Ouimet said. “Alyscia sings and plays guitar, and Cassandra is a vocalist.”
The Distinguished Business of the Year Award will go to D’Amato Construction Co. of Bristol, which donated a matching handicapped railing to the antique woodwork staircase on the outside of the Grange Hall during an extensive renovation last spring.
The Grange was honored for its renovation efforts with a Chamber of Commerce Beautification Award.
Ouimet noted that Grange members Karen Mowad and her daughter Makendra, 5, were instrumental in the Grange receiving a $3,750 grant from the Main Street Foundation of Bristol.
The grant is going to be used to start an educational garden for the Junior Grange, he said. “We’ll have examples of some of the produce and flowers grown in Connecticut. The Junior Grangers will get to participate in growing the items — from a seed or small plant right to harvest.”
That’s the roots of the Grange, which started as an agricultural organization, he explained.
