Norfield Grange news for March

By Ruth L. Hickcox

  MARCH 9, 2013 --

You could say that our new year at Norfield Grange began with toy bears and a crazy rabbit.  At our January meeting Sue Sulla, Lecturer nonpareil, displayed a variety of very old teddy bears, one of which, a Steiff, had been dearly loved by her own son many years ago.  She explained that all such bears had been named after Teddy Roosevelt!  We were fascinated.

The crazy rabbit, of course was Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Hatter.  A Mad Hatter Tea Party was held during our Farmers’ Market on Jan. 12.  Thirty-five tea enthusiasts, many of them Girl Scouts, wearing a wide variety of hats, were treated to a tasting of four teas provided by Loose Leaf Tea Company.  The teas were accompanied by cream, sugar, finger sandwiches and baked delicacies.  Ewe Ojoravska, Grange member and tea etiquette consultant and sommelier, designed custom booklets for each contestant.  Just to show you how “mad” it all was, one of the four winners was Lexi Gray, a faithful farmer at the market, who wore a hat topped with a flowering cloth beet!

The end of January proved to be as much fun at the beginning.  Norfield hosted a “Bring Your Dog to the Market Day.”  The winner was Riley, a rescue Golden Retriever owned by Granger Roland Poirier, who went home with a bag of Molly & Murphy Irish Dog Biscuits from Trumbull.

Finally, we had our first Fair Planning meeting.  Kevin Parker is the new chairman.  And now we have 94 members.  It promises to be a great year.
