Cheshire Grange hosts successful Hot Air Balloon program

By Robert Charbonneau, Public Relations Co-Director

  MARCH 16, 2012 --

Cheshire Grange hosted a Neighbor’s Night program on Hot Air Ballooning on March 7.

Lecturer Marge Bernhardt turned over the program over to Jane Miller, CWA Chairman.  Jane gave a brief history about CWA.  A number of Cheshire ladies lined up in front with cutout of balloons and each talked about a portion of what CWA is involved with.  These involved some of their projects, including: Words for Thirds, sending care packages to the troops, etc.

Ruel Miller read an article of the winter of 1816.  The article was about winter stayed through summer of that year.  This included drought and excessive sunspots.

Jane introduced Erwin Dressel, owner of the hot air balloon rides, “Castle View Ballooning.”  Erwin gave a brief history of ballooning, along with a slide show.  Erwin also talked about the modern equipment now used.  He talked about the different aspects - pre-heater and burner, the basket, how the balloon is set before flight, and flight conditions. He finished up his talk with a 6 minute video taken at a Glens Falls, NY ballooning event.

Erwin then talked about CT’s first balloonist, Silas M. Brooks, 1824-1906.  Erwin took questions and answers.
