AUGUST 2, 2011 -- We hope everyone has been enjoying the HOT summer. Our members have been hard at work helping with two community gardens and a flower garden in our community.
More than 150 packets of seeds were given out to two community gardens and they are doing well as long as they are weeded and watered. The Prospect Senior Center Garden has produced vegetables that have been used in the daily luncheons at the center. We hope they can continue to enjoy them for a few more weeks. A fence was put up this year to keep the animals out and the garden seems to be doing better.
We were happy to have a security light installed for the lower parking lot at the Senior Center. It will make a great difference when the fall daylight hours are much shorter.
We have been hard at work making items to be sold at the Big E and the Annual Excelsior Pomona Bazaar and Roast Beef Dinner in November. We use the proceeds from the table to purchase the dictionaries for the Third Graders at Algonquin School and we were able to donate 16 story books for their library this year along with giving out 126 dictionaries.
Our next meeting will be September 8 and we are hoping the butternut squash we all planted are doing well and we will be able to donate some to the local food bank along with any other vegetables that we grew for this purpose and for the soup kitchen. There is nothing like fresh vegetables at a meal.
Our officers did not change this year and we hope we can keep being successful in our endeavors as we have in previous years.
We want to congratulate Mayor Bob on running for Mayor for his 19th term. Mayor Bob, a grange member for more than 40 years has been there to help us whenever we are in need of help. He is responsible for organizing the Town wide Tag Sales twice a year. Prospect Grange hopes to be able to participate September 10, 2011 rain or shine and get a little more revenue to help with our projects. We have done so in the past. Prospect Grange members who wish to donate items, please contact Jean Meehan at 203-758-5653.
