| FEBRUARY 7, 2011 -- “Recalling the Civil War,” featuring raconteur Gordon Markiewicz, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m. at the Oxford Grange Hall. Markiewicz will impersonate a Connecticut Civil War veteran 20 years after the war. He will be accompanied by two mannequins, one Union and one Confederate, who will share memories of the war from opposing viewpoints.
An experienced Civil War re-enactor, Markiewicz says he likes to use his experiences “to corroborate, or give credence to, a lot of anecdotes written about the war experience. One of my main goals in reenacting has always been the practice of “experiential archaeology,” that is, gaining experience about the time period by living with the material culture of the time. I think I’ve got a pretty good handle on what the soldiers experienced back then. I will dress as a veteran telling his stories twenty-odd years later.”
In addition to the Markiewicz talk, the program will feature displays listing the names and service of Oxford men who served in the Civil War, and photos of the Oxford gravestones of Civil War veterans.
There will be a silent auction of several Civil War books, including: “The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War,” by Major George R. Davis, U.S. Army; Leslie J. Perry, Civilian Expert; and Joseph W. Kirkley, Civilian Expert. Compiled by Captain Calin D. Cowles, 23rd US Infantry.
This is a large compilation of maps, drawings, photographs, and other useful Civil War information. The maps showing battle positions are second to none, drawn up in the 1890s. Any Civil War scholar or buff will appreciate the detail and the comprehensiveness of the maps selected for inclusion. There are battles only but the most knowledgeable Civil War authority has even heard of. This is a must for any serious Civil War student.

Admission to the event is $5 for adults; Children under 12 will be admitted Free. Refreshments are included. In the event of bad weather, the event will be postponed until Sunday, Feb. 13, at 1:00 p.m.
Proceeds from the program will be used to defray costs of opening the Twitchell-Rowland Homestead as a public local history museum. |
