Oxford Grange to host Kick Cancer Class

By Valley Independent-Sentinel (1/11/11)

  JANUARY 23, 2011 --

A “Kick Cancer” self defense class is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 28 at 7:00 p.m. at the Oxford Grange on Route 67.  The class is taught by Amy Cote, third degree black belt and Director of the Institute of Martial Arts in Oxford.

All proceeds from the event will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.  The class is $20 per person.

“Kick Cancer” is sponsored by team “Hoofin’ it for Healthy Hooters” who will be walking in the Koman for the Cure 3-day/60-mile walk in Boston this July.

The team is made up of Oxford residents, Tina Aldo, Jennifer Coan-Mahmood, Kelly Donohue, and Tara Gurecki. Each walker must raise a minimum of $2,300 in donations to participate in the walk. Funds from the Komen three-day events are invested in breast cancer research, education, and community outreach programs.

On why they’re taking up this cause, Coan-Mahmood said, “One person is diagnosed with breast cancer every three minutes in the United States. That’s why we’re walking so far – to do something bold about breast cancer (though walking 60 miles is nothing compared to the challenges faced by those stricken with the illness.) Breast Cancer affects virtually everyone, weather you’ve battled it yourself or know someone who has. Were walking for us, our daughters, all the women in our lives, and all the women in yours.”

To secure your spot in the “Kick Cancer” self defense class or learn more about the Komen 3-day/60 mile walk or team “Hoofin’ It for Healthy Hooters,” please contact Jennifer Coan-Mahmood at 203.530.5734 or jcmahmood@gmail.com.
