In the long run: Hamburg Fair marks 109th year

By Kristina Dorsey, New London Day (8/19/10)

  AUGUST 20, 2010 --

All those events that boast about celebrating, say, their 70th year or their 80th? Ha! They're pikers compared to the Hamburg Fair.

This quaint fest in Lyme is hitting its 109th anniversary - yes, take that, you under-100 slackers.

But don't expect anything too wild and wooly to mark the occasion.

See, fans revel in the Hamburg Fair traditions, and the fair obliges. It proudly describes its offerings as old-fashioned fun, and this weekend's festivities certain adhere to that.

It's a three-day run of animal pulls, amusement rides, pie-eating contests, small animal tents, and all those multitudes of fair exhibits - vegetables, handcrafts, arts and crafts, and much more.

Hamburg Fair, Fri. 8/20 - Sun. 8/22, Lyme Grange Fairgrounds, Route 156 and Sterling City Road, Lyme; 5-11 p.m. Fri., 9 a.m.-11 p.m. Sat., and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Sun.; $5 ($3 seniors, free kids under 12); (860) 434-9497, hamburgfair@comcast.net.
