MAY 7, 2009 -- Each year, Prospect Grange selects worthy citizens for their unselfish work in our community. This year the annual Citizen of the Year and Public Service Awards day will be at 2 p.m. May 17 at the Prospect Senior Center. This is open to the public. Gov. M. Jodi Rell has been invited along with Sen. Joan Hartley, D-15th District, and Rep. Vickie Nardello, D-Prospect, to help present the awards.
The Grange will honor Prospect resident Kathy Patrick, a teacher and coach at Kaynor Technical High School for more than 25 years. As Kathy's three daughters began school, she got involved in civic organizations. She became a Girl Scout leader and supervised Girl Scout cookie sales, dances, Thinking Day activities and fashion shows. Kathy and her Girl Scout troop planted a Peace Pole at Caplan Park in honor of the victims of 9/11.
Kathy joined the Prospect Congregational Children's Choir, worked with the Woodland High School cheerleaders, volleyball, softball, swimming, diving and track teams, and the Booster Club, among others.
As leader of the Prospect Congregational Church Senior High Youth Group, she helped raise $5,000 during the Homeless Awareness Sleep-outs. The money was donated to Greater Waterbury Interfaith Ministries.
Kathy is site volunteer coordinator for the Youth Health Service Corps, a volunteer program for youth interested in health-related careers. She has make an impact on our small town with her big heart.
Prospect Grange also will give a Public Service Award to the Prospect Police Explorers, a group of young adults learning law enforcement and volunteering at various public events. Their recent fundraiser of a basketball game with the Court Jesters and the Woodland basketball team helped further the cause.
Prospect Grange is proud to be able to honor these great volunteers. Many times their work is overlooked.
The Grange is a community-minded, family-oriented organization with an active voice in legislation to protect the people in our communities.
Jean Meehan is a 51-year active member of local and state Grange and secretary of the Prospect Grange for more than 20 years.
